Here are some safety tips for DIY roofers:

  • Clothing & safety equipment: Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear with non-slip soles. For additional safety, wear a harness and secure it to an anchor on the roof.
  • Weather: Check the forecast before you start working, and pay attention to any potential for wind, rain or extreme heat. Stop working if these conditions arise while you’re on the roof.
  • Use the Buddy System: Working with a partner makes the process safer as they can steady the ladder, pass tools and maintain a tidy working area.
  • Ladders: Ensure your ladder is in good condition and placed on level ground.
  • Take breaks: They didn’t build Rome in a day, and you (likely) won’t be able to complete your roof in a day. That’s OK! Taking breaks is important to prevent accidents caused by fatigue.
